The golden age of pirates begins twenty years before Blackbeard or Edward Kenway captain a ship, when “Pirate King” Henry Avery plunders his way from Europe to India and back. His exploits become legend, and evoke a glorious life at sea for future generations of sailors.

The story of Avery’s exploits was quickly mythologized, filling sailors with dreams of adventure. This romanticized story gave men a false sense of life at sea and began the pirate stereotype that remains today.

When Avery’s story was put in print, he became legendary. In a few years, his story would inspire history’s most infamous pirates to take their destinies into their own hands.

Letters of Marque commissioned privateers to legally attack and plunder enemy ships, merchant or otherwise. This essentially legalized piracy during wartime. This is a sample letter from the 18th century.
